Float Therapy
Floatation Therapy is a unique experience that involves floating effortlessly in a tank of skin temperature water that contains a high concentration of Epsom salts. The tank and room are designed to eliminate all external stimuli, including light, sound, touch and impacts of gravity, creating a completely relaxed and weightless environment. This therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its numerous benefits for both the body and mind.
One of the main benefits of floating is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. The lack of sensory input allows the body to enter a deep state of relaxation, lowering cortisol levels and promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. This can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall well-being.
Floating can also aid in the relief of physical pain, such as chronic back pain or muscle tension, due to the buoyancy of the saltwater reducing pressure on the body. Research has shown that within the first 20 minutes that Diastolic Blood pressure can be reduced by up to 20%.
Floating can be an incredibly rejuvenating and transformative experience for those seeking a natural and effective way to reduce stress, anxiety, alleviate pain, and improve their overall health and wellness.
Our Float System
The Floatation Sanctuary uses FloatSpa Premium Float systems, which are among the most advanced and hygienic float systems in the world.
These systems, unique in New Zealand to The Floatation Sanctuary, provide excellent hygiene via a complex 4+1 step water cleaning filtration system. Before and after every client session, the float tank or float room is completely emptied to an external water reservoir tank ensuring every drop of the water being processed at least twice between every session. When not in use, the FloatSpa tank automatically circulates and cleans the water every 2 hours. The water regeneration process includes chemical, physical, and mechanical cleaning methods for a perfect result. Even the inside of the pod or pool is cleaned and sanitized after every client, so each person enjoys a clean and safe environment for a relaxing experience.(video courtesy FloatSpa Kft)
Frequently Asked Questions
Please read these so that you can get the best floating experience possible.
It is now possible for breastfeeding women to float but we need to talk first as there are some things that will need to be done to achieve this.
Are there any restrictions on when I can float?
You should not float if you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, are menstruating, have infectious diseases, open wounds, or skin ulcers, have a perforated eardrum, are incontinent or have had diarrhea in the last 3 days, have uncontrolled epilepsy, have recently dyed hair that still bleeds colour when washed, are intoxicated or using drugs, or have just used artificial tanning products. Freshly shaved or waxed skin may sting. Please check with a health practitioner if you have heart or kidney conditions or are sensitive to magnesium. Breastfeeding clients should consult with us before booking.
What should I wear whilst floating?
Floating takes place in a private room—no clothing or swimwear is needed or recommended. High salt concentration can form crystals in clothing, causing discomfort.
Will I feel claustrophobic in the pod?
The pod interior is as wide as a queen-size bed and 1.25 m high—you can’t touch roof of pod whilst floating. You control the lid and lighting. For extra space, our open float pool is larger and has no lid.
Can I exit the pod at any time?
Yes—you’re in full control. You can open the lid and exit whenever you wish.
Is the water hygienic and changed between sessions?
After every session, the pods or pool are fully drained and the water goes through a multi-stage filtration process with hydrogen peroxide, UV, particle filters, sand/glass filters, and storage. The solution contains ~500 kg of food-grade Epsom salts, creating an environment hostile to microbes. Pods and pool are sanitized between clients.
What should I bring?
Bring a hair comb/brush and a water bottle. We supply organic shampoo & conditioner, towels, hairdryer, and Sukin skincare products. No swimsuit is needed.
How should I prepare before floating?
Eat a light meal about 2 hours before (don’t float hungry or overly full), arrive well hydrated, avoid caffeine for 4–5 hours before, avoid shaving or waxing right before, and remove contact lenses before entering. Other than that—just be open to a wonderful experience!
Can anyone float?
Yes—our pods and pool accommodate all sizes and shapes. Suitable for ages 14+, though you must be able to enter and exit unaided. Floating may help reduce pain, improve sleep, relieve stress/anxiety, and aid recovery.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
Yes—the water is kept at ~35 °C (skin temperature). You’ll enjoy weightlessness and boosted magnesium/sulfate levels. We allow up to 37 weeks, though please consult your healthcare provider if complications are present.
What’s in the tank?
The tank holds purified water saturated with food-grade Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). Magnesium supports over 325 enzymes, muscle control, energy production and detox; sulfate aids toxin elimination, nutrient absorption, joint/brain protein formation, and headache relief. Many people are magnesium-deficient.
